This all goes well for most of the time. Until near the end, the academy is suddenly attacked by a group of unknown fighters. In emergency response, these trainees, who were simply doing their first true mission, are now ordered to take out the enemy fighters. It is a difficult time for their first true air battle, but all manages to go well and all enemy fighters are shot down. When the trainee squadron returns to the ground, everyone is stunned by the attack. As it had seemed anyway, Belka was at peace for over 2 decades now. No one could understand how or why they could be attacked, and why the air force academy at that. The government then issues a release, declaring the attack as an act of terrorism. This spreads panic throughout Belka. However, relief soon returns as over the next few weeks of increasing training missions, nothing else happens. All is quiet. Mission: Clear Skies After completing halfway through their training to become ace level fighters, the trainees are brought in for their next milestone mission, superplane maneuvers. The mission is sent to high altitudes, far above the castle. The mission is to be done in X-02 Wyvern class fighter craft. All is going well, however, halfway through, AWACS detects enemy fighters approaching. This again brings panic to the squadron. Soon though, they vanish, and it is declared a false alarm. Upon completion, the trainees return to base. What they find is horrifying. The attack was not a false alarm afterall, and the base was attacked and nearly destroyed. Though repairs were already well underway, this second terror attack brought even more panic. The Belkan Government this time around did all it could to make sure word of the attack did not get out. The word of mouth could not be stopped though, and soon all of Belka was worried about how many more of these “terrorist” strikes would contiue. Rumors grew, and panic ensued, which led the academy to become high security, and extreme measures to be taken. Mission: Moonlit Flight After the second terrorist attack, Belka tightened security all over the nation, but especially most over the apparent primary target, the academy. Fighter squadrons have been called from all around Belka to patrol various high-risk zones. Even the trainee pilots themselves have been split up into patrol groups around castle airspace. The patrol was going well, until suddenly, unidentified fighters appeared. A warning was silenly sent to the ground base which quickly submitted new info. A night air raid was beginning. The only fighters in the area though, were of Matt and Mattie, so they would have to defend the castle themselves. After a long and difficult night battle, the remaining forces retreated, and the academy was saved yet again. This time, thankfully, there are zero casualties. Mission: Waters of Deception After the air raid calms down, word on the rising number of terror strikes continues to spread across the world. However, word of the success of the Zodiac Trainee Squadron, and most specifically, Matt and Mattie, has spread even further. The two have become famous for their ability to take on these large scale attacks even though they're only in training. The two have been moved to the leaders of their trainee squadron, below only Nagase. Training now is nearing completion and everything is looking up again. Some small isolated attacks have occurred on ground and in other isolated airspaces, but nothing major, and all small attacks that have been in the vicinity of the academy was taken down by Matt and Mattie. Things appear to be moving smoothly now. Though all seems well, rumor has it that there has been strange activity sighted off the coast of the Arctic Ocean. The Belkan Air Force decides to send a series of experimental reconnaissance craft being developed at the academy airbase to the site to survey and gather information. Hopes are up that they are just false rumors, and that something larger is not going on. The Zodiac Squadron is sent as an escort. Surveys begin over the Arctic Ocean and northeast Belkan coastline. After a period of time of managing to survey silently, their position has been revealed. It turns out there is a large base of unknown origin along the coast. Warning sirens go off and terrorist fighters are deployed. Because the reconnaissance has not been finished, Zodiac is ordered to take them on. Matt and Mattie in the lead, they manage to shoot down all enemy fighters trying to take down the survey planes. However, suddenly as if out of nowhere many more enemy craft appear, and the reconnaissance has no idea of the source. They take them on as intelligence attempts to resolve. Finally, all enemy craft are all shot down, and no further reinforcements are seen on the radar. The reconnaissance craft is also finished with its survey. The trainees are called back to base to analyze the data. Suddenly, large bursts of winds start forming and taking out the support craft. Above them, a large cyclonic storm begins to brew, and fast. AWACS weather data shows this storm is not of natural origin. On emergency meneuvers the trainees and survey craft manage to outrun the storm and return to base. All is not well though, as this mysterious storm continues to grow and intensify. Soon after, it makes total landfall and moves inland to cover all of the northeastern Belkan continent. Mission: Attacked! Multiple superstorms continue to rage over northeast Belka. Intel manages to analyze the data. The results they found were astonishing. The “terrorists” are bigger than they had thought, and are currently preparing a full scale attack, with the academy being the front line. Reconnaissance craft and AWACS weather data recordings also determine the origin of the superstorms. They appear to be generated by some form of tampering in the atmosphere. Further data gathering concludes that this is by some form of unknown weapon. The origin site of the weapon must be in the ocean near the Arctic base. Unfortunately, aircraft are still grounded do to the unending wave of storms. Things then take a turn for the worse. Warning sirens go off that a group of fighters, armored with protection from the weather are fast approaching the castle. Hope seems lost, as no Belkan craft have resistance to this kind of atmospheric disturbance. As the fighters approach, Matt and Mattie make a final decision to risk their aircraft and lives to protect the base. Nagase follows close behind. The three take off and soon experience the extreme force of the winds, but they fly on, and meet the attackers, taking them on. Not long after, the rest of the Zodiac Squadron follows to meet their wingmen in the battle. The dogfight lasted for what seemed like hours, and the trainees barely survived due to their inferior aircraft. However, after a long fight, they triumphed and the attackers retreated. Mission: In Plain Sight The storms finally die down for a few days and supplies begin flying in. These supplies are to armor against most of the wind damage on the Belkan aircraft. Modifications are made between storms and finally they are complete. The Air Force is now ready for a major air battle to take down these terrorists on their own base. Air squadrons from the region are gathered for a massive air battle. They are sent to fight over the Arctic coast, to capture the enemy base and take out the atmospheric modification device, which has been determined to be deployed from a Scinfaxi Class Submarine. The offensive force arrives at the terrorist base with no problem, however, upon sighting fighters are sent up and another storm starts. This time around, with the capabilities, they are ready to fight within the heavy weather. Strict orders are given upon original deployment that the trainees and fighters are not to destroy the base, nor to kill the terrorist leaders, but to capture them for further interrogation. The air battle rages on through the superstorm. However, it proves impossible to destroy the atmospheric engine with their aircraft alone. The Scinfaxi Submarine it is being deployed by is too heavily armored. Request for backup is transmitted. After further holding off of the storm and direct attacks from the submarine itself, a beam of light fires from the sky and hits the carrier, damaging it. Confirmation is sent out that the Belkan defensive chemical lazer system, the Excalibur II is operational and standing by for support. Upon this info, the aerial commander sends out the order to destroy the base and kill every last living terrorist. Nagase attempts to resist, but is unable to convince him that orders were the exact opposite. The squadron casually follows along with it, and Matt and Mattie, though reluctant to do something they know is morally wrong, are forced to comply as well. With the aid of the Excalibur II, the entire base is destroyed, the atmospheric modifier taken out, and all enemies killed on sight. It was a raging bloodbath that swept silence across those who saw it. Mission: Delivery A celebration is called at the academy in honor of this victory. All of the great military leaders of Belka attend. Even the apparently famed “Leuchtfeuer” attends the ceremony. Matt and Mattie though have no clue he is. This unnerves them, along with the fact that no one cares that important orders were violated when they killed all of those people. Leuchtfeuer himself personally congratulates Matt and Mattie for their work at “leading” the offensive against the terrorists. He then privately calls them aside to offer them a mission of his own. The academy has a shipment of top secret military equipment that needs to be escorted to South Belka for assembly. Leuchtfeuer requests that Matt and Mattie be the transports personal escort. Matt and Mattie half reluctantly take on the mission. It seems simple enough, as they had just destroyed the base of the terrorists, so risk of attack is minimum. Still, it seemed like the total destruction of the enemy was quite sudden, and that something wasn't right. The flight lasts many hours without touching the ground, and almost without stopping, with the exception of the occasional refueling and break at some of Belka's aerial outposts. Things go as planned as thousands of miles are covered. It would seem that everything is indeed okay. Suddenly though, nearing their destination, an AWACS report goes out that an air raid is approaching. They are put on alert and told to shoot down any incoming fighters. The fighters approach, and it is a larger air raid than any Matt and Mattie has seen before, and it's only the two of them alone this time. IFF data comes in showing that they are of the same identification as the terrorists! Matt and Mattie are forced to fight the largest aerial battle they've seen yet, all alone. They desperately strike down fighters to protect the transport. They barely succeed, but still, they succeed. They manage to land at the base they were escorting the carrier to, and relieve it of its precious cargo. Unfortunately, they never discover what that cargo is. Mission: Air Raid! After a few days of recovery and repairs Matt and Mattie are ready to fly home. The cargo has been shipped to the ground location it was intended for and all is ready. Suddenly, word of yet another air raid is released. The base is put on alert, but it's too late. A large aerial force complete with bombers arrives at the base and begins its attack. Matt and Mattie are barely able to get off the ground before the runway is blown up. Unable to look back at the damage they fly forward, hoping to escape the airspace. The air strike finishes and turns back, flying straight towards them, and at higher speeds then their planes can handle. They go for the risk and begin their counter attack, striking down multiple fighters and disabling many others. Eventually the enemy makes an apparent retreat. It is then that AWACS reports in that the South Belkan base was destroyed. There were no survivors. However, this is no time to stop and discuss, as then radar shows a second wave of enemies is incoming, this time in much more advanced aircraft. Matt and Mattie proceed to take on this force as well. They do it quite effectively too, especially Mattie, who even to her own surprise is almost flawless at her attacking. As the fighters begin to thin out, AWACS reports that the leader has been detected. Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere one final fighter flies from ahead. This one flies at more erratic paths, the pilot clearly has skill. He is soon identified as the leader of the air strike, and shows the skills of a true ace. The aircraft is identified by the insignia of a ribbon. After realizing the inability to escape, Matt and Mattie take this “ribbon” head on. As they begin their attack, the “ribbon” introduces himself as “Mobius One.” And the fight begins. Mobius One is more powerful than any of the fighters they have ever fought before, and is near impossible to evade much less hit. The fight rages on for what seems like forever until, in a fateful strike, Mattie manages to shoot him out of the sky. Mobius One falls to his apparent death. The Whole Story Part 2: The Zodiac Tactical Fighter Squadron Last Revised: January 7, 2010 Mission: Sword of Determination Matt an Mattie return home to be recognized once again as heroes. However, this time the celebration, as before, is short lived. As this air raid proves that the terrorists are still out there. And Mobius One turns out to be a terrorist leader who has been at large for over a decade. All is revealed when a transmission is sent to the capital of Belka. In the transmission, the “terrorists” reveal themselves to be “The Wings of Ragnarok,” an organization that is based within the Republic of Emmerian States. They then proceed to declare war on Belka. This is a heavy strike for the entire country. In state of this however, Leuchtfeuer promotes Matt and Mattie directly from the academy to being top aces in the Belkan Military. They are to be the center of the offensive force, and to lead the newly dubbed “Zodiac Tactical Fighter Squadron.” The ZTFS is meant to be the flagship squadron of the aerial branch of the Belkan military's most secretive branch, the “Combat Superiority” devision. After being briefed on their new position, Matt and Mattie are escorted to their new headquarters. The ZTFS will be based from the Belkan Air Superiority Institute or BASI. BASI HQ is located in Sudentor, North Belka. Shortly after settling in, the ZTFS is assigned its first mission. The Excalibur II, though already operational is being upscaled even further now that it is to be used as a full offensive weapon. The squadron is to fly to Excalibur and be on patrol to keep out any enemies during the upgrade. They arrive at the Excalibur II, located in Tauburg in perfect timing. Supplies are beginning to arrive, and as expected, Ragnarok fighters are reported to be approaching. Soon, they arrive in Tauburg airspace. The ZTFS begins its defensive strike against the enemy. The enemy strike this time, was thankfully small. The Excalibur II managed to continue its expansion and complete its upgrade.
